An Update in Adhesion Dentistry for 2011

Description

Until 2011, research had shown that single-layer adhesives are acidic, more permeable & less durable as compared to two-layer adhesives. However as adhesives in dentistry continue to evolve, Dr. Suh will share new research showing that certain simplified, single-layer adhesives can be utilized without compromising bond strength or durability of the adhesive layer, and how highly-crosslinking monomer chemistry allows for these simplified adhesives to perform as more hydrophobic adhesives.

Dr. Nuñez will provide information on the clinical application of these adhesives and review the techniques to use them effectively in the office.

Proper adhesion protocols are also extremely important for intraoral repairs of existing restorations, but the techniques have been complicated with the addition of substrates such as alumina or zirconia. Dr. Suh will review the chemistry of adhesion to indirect substrates and how they work for successful long-term bonding. Dr. Nuñez will then provide a step-by-step technique of intraoral repairs to various substrates that clinicians face in the office.

Learning objectives:

  • Learn about a paradigm shift for Total-Etch and Self-Etch adhesives: simplified adhesives with highly crosslinking monomers can be as durable as conventional 2-layer adhesives.
  • Understand proper adhesion protocols for different indirect substrates, and when to use what for each one.
  • Explore how to maximize predictability when repairing metal, porcelain and zirconia restorations.
